Elevate’s Vince Vetri and Starbucks’ Lisa Kremer-Brown for ACC Docket
Mar 9, 2018
You can’t manage what you can’t measure. So, how do we demonstrate the value that our legal department returns to the company through improved outside counsel management? This common question is posed frequently by legal operations professionals and there are often multiple answers. When Starbucks and Elevate considered how the legal operations team could effectively communicate the value of enhanced outside counsel management, we started by asking ourselves, “what data are available and how might we best leverage those data as the basis for decision making?”

In the midst of increasing patent prosecution workload, Perkins Coie’s intellectual property practice faced a tricky challenge: effectively managing its vast amount of patent portfolios without getting lost in the data.
“When you’re dealing with hundreds of different activities that are going through for a large client portfolio, it’s really important to have a way of staying on top of that, especially since the data comes from so many different systems,” said Rick Howell, chief information officer at Perkins Coie.
So Perkins Coie turned to technology, commissioning legal tech service provider Elevate services to develop a proprietary “Patent Prosecution Platform” that the firm launched in-house in spring 2017. Based off of Elevate Services’ Cael Project Management technology, the platform essentially aims to bring project management to the unwieldy area of patent prosecution.
Vince Vetri interviewed for Legal Analytics
Jan 8, 2018
As more law firms and corporate legal departments use analytics to mine data and extract usable insights, many misconceptions have emerged about what analytics can do, how the technology might be used in the future and the consequences for the legal community.
To fully leverage the benefits of analytics, it’s important to have an accurate grasp of the landscape. Here, then, are five common myths surrounding legal analytics — and the truth behind them, according to leading experts.
Vince Vetri interviewed for Legal Analytics
Jan 8, 2018
Legal analytics is on the upswing: A recent study found that, over the next five years, the market will grow to $1.85 billion — a compound annual rate of 32.7 percent. Clearly, law firms and corporate legal departments are primed and ready to dig into the data, delivering insights that drive positive change and improve their competitive advantage.
Certainly, law firms will have to research and evaluate before purchase in order to maximize any technology investment. But once you’ve gotten the go-ahead and implemented the latest legal analytics tools in e-discovery, case strategy, billing optimization, forecasting or business development, how can you get the biggest bang for your buck from your analytics? And can you move beyond the buzz — toward real ROI that proves you’re saving time and money?
Matt Todd interviewed for Legaltech News
Dec 1, 2017
Implementing legal technology within corporate legal departments takes more than just IT resources and a whole lot of time. For any project to get off the ground, it needs support from the C-suite and managers of an organization.
But gaining support can be one of the greatest barriers for a legal department, not in the least because of how corporate law is perceived, said Matt Todd, vice president of business solutions at Elevate Services.

A new survey from the Corporate Legal Ops Consortium (CLOC) shows that 46% of Fortune 500 companies use at least one alternative legal service provider. Interviewed by Roy Strom for American Lawyer, Liam Brown expects lines will blur between law firms and law companies like Elevate.
“I don’t think it will happen quickly,” Brown said. “Most corporations will use law firms and law companies somewhat interchangeably with their own internal law department. And they will simply figure out what is the best portfolio of resources. Where do we need expertise? Where do we need hands doing the work?”

Pratik Patel interviewed for Canadian Lawyer Mag
Nov 6, 2017
While all general counsel would probably say they’d like to pay less for legal services, others would suggest predictability of cost continues to be even more important to them on large or ongoing transactions and litigation. When you’re in the depths of a major M&A or piece of litigation, the ability to have a plan in place to track costs and the progress of a major matter can go a long way to providing peace of mind. For experienced corporate counsel such as Jennifer Good, vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary with CRH Canada Group Inc., greater certainty is something she looks for from her external firms.
CRH Canada is a building materials manufacturing and construction company with offices in Toronto. One of the company’s law firms, Gowling (Canada) WLG, has used Cael Project (previously Cael LPM) from Elevate Services on a couple of acquisition transactions for the company. It’s a tool Good says allows “for a lot more flexibility and transparency.”
Liam Brown interviewed for Law.com to define how AI is changing the legal industry
Nov 3, 2017
For some lawyers, artificial intelligence boils down to fears that robots will take over their jobs. But AI offers opportunities for firms that are proactive about incorporating the technology into the services they offer clients. And those who ignore it risk getting outpaced by the competition.
That was the message of the College of Law Practice Management’s conference this year on the future of law. About 125 lawyers and legal operations professionals converged on Atlanta for the annual confab the last week in October, hosted by Georgia State University College of Law. This year’s theme: “Running With the Machines: Artificial Intelligence in Law Practice.”

Signs of the Times: The Rise of Managed Legal Services
Aug 2, 2017
During the month of June, a handful of conversations got me thinking about the trajectory of managed legal services, namely the providers of an integrated combination of consulting, technology, and talent solutions. Roughly a decade along in its evolution, this category of legal service providers (which includes Axiom, Consilio, Elevate Services, QuisLex, and UnitedLex), provides hands-on support to general counsel facing operational challenges, often helping transform key pieces of legal service delivery. My thoughts crystalized upon hearing from an esteemed comrade, Mark Cohen, about an exciting new career chapter — demonstrating the interesting ways that “New Law” is shaping up…

The Shock of the New
Jack Diggle (Elevate) and Chris Fowler (BT) for The In-House Lawyer
May 19, 2017
At a recent event for senior in-house counsel in London, two clear messages emerged. Firstly, that there is a rapid professionalisation in the way that major legal departments are managing themselves. Secondly, there was agreement that much of the support for change was being driven from the ‘alternative’ legal market. Despite this, there was a lack of agreement as to what lay behind this process and how alternative providers were supporting it. In this article we explore these two issues. Firstly, what are the changes in-house legal departments are looking to bring about? And, secondly, how can the alternative marketplace help support them?
NetApp and Elevate Named ACC Value Champions
Going Big: Integrating Value Strategies into a Repeatable Framework
May 17, 2017
Data management and storage company NetApp garnered a Value Champion award in 2013 for its data-driven, technology roadmap project. Not satisfied to rest on their laurels, General Counsel Matt Fawcett, Senior Director of Legal Operations Connie Brenton, VP of the Innovation Services Group (IP Group) Beth O’Callahan, recognized that innovation in silos wasn’t enough. “We had to find a way to integrate individual innovations into a cohesive program that would create greater spend and value alignment,” says Brenton. The team sought to move from “small arrow” (innovation in unstructured silos) to “big arrow” impact—a structured combination of innovation tactics towards a focused, larger and more impactful result. Continuing to work with co-Champ Elevate Services, which acts as an extension of its legal department, NetApp embarked on a project to pilot this strategy of cohesive steps within the most impactful area, the Innovation Services Group, which has the highest outside legal spend. The Innovation Services Group manages about 3,000 patents, as well as trademarks and copyright…
Setting the CLOC Forward on Operational Excellence
Paul Lippe for the ABA Journal
May 18, 2017
Last year I asked the question “will lawyers embrace operational excellence?” and so far the answer is a resounding maybe. Lawyers seem to be keen these days on “innovation” and perhaps AI, but to large extent have left operational excellence to the operational folks. I believe this is a mistake, because focusing on operational excellence is actually a way for lawyers to boost their overall performance. As we talk about innovation, we’re really talking about four different dimensions of doing legal work better…
