@thelawyermag’s In-house Attitudes Survey Shows Rise of the Secondee

June 08, 2015

The Lawyer Magazine’s in-house attitudes survey contains a wealth of interesting findings. As a consultant with ‘newlaw’ firm @halebury, one specialism of which is placing secondees in-house, I’m particularly interested in the results regarding secondees. In my experience secondees cover roles that an organisation is trying to recruit for and maternity leaves but increasingly we undertake major one-off projects which might previously have had to have been outsourced to expensive external big law firms.

The rise of the secondee A third (30 per cent) are currently using secondees, with almost a fifth (17.6 per cent) having one or two. The three leading areas where secondees are deployed are: corporate (35.3 per cent); litigation and dispute resolution (24.7 per cent); and banking and finance (20.7 per cent).  This matches where in-house teams are focusing their recruitment, so it would be interesting to know whether secondees are filling roles where candidates cannot be found or whether the secondees are demonstrating how these specialists can add real value to in-house teams and driving recruitment.
