Reciprocal Mentoring for DE&I

April 27, 2021

Deliberate Equitability & Inclusion seems to be at the top of most organisations agendas right now, and my social media feed is full on the subject. This article caught my eye and talks about how we can be a better ally. But yesterday I heard about how ‘reciprocal mentoring’ can be used to help educate people at both ends of an organisation.

This is a step on from ‘reverse mentoring’ and acknowledges both parties as “co-mentors.” It provides a safe space to listen, constructively challenge, and suggest how things can improve. Unconscious bias can occur on both sides, and the reciprocal mentoring session is a chance for both parties to understand where the other is coming from…and educate each other.

I look forward to finding out how this works in practice.

Being an ally means using your positional authority or status to advocate for your team members
