Law firms: lessons learned from in-house counsel clients

This is a refreshing piece from Ryan McConnell about how his fledgling law firm developed its corporate culture by adopting the best from its various in-house counsel clients. There’s certainly room for more cross-fertilisation between firms and in-house departments.
I did what every big firm lawyer at some point in time threatens to do. I took a leap of faith and formed a law firm with a childhood friend—a successful plaintiffs’ lawyer. The firm struggled early on trying different approaches for firm culture to find a model that was right for us. At the end of the day, it was our clients who showed us how to be successful. God bless them. For many of them, we become an extension of their legal department. And we learned from their successes. We have taken the best traits from each of their legal departments and built our firm culture around what makes those organizations successful.
