How Unconscious Bias Affects the Workplace.

June 29, 2015

It’s fascinating to read about how unconscious bias affects decisions in the workplace. It’s so commendable that blind auditions for orchestras have been introduced (copied for entertainment purposes in the first round of the TV show The Voice). However, this article doesn’t make practical suggestions as to how we can really tackle this issue in more common-all-garden workplaces such as offices. I’d love to hear your suggestions?

Biases are found in situations where individuals have the power to influence outcomes through their decision and actions. As a result of these unconscious biases, recruitment processes, promotions, allocation of work, performance reviews, and redundancies are not conducted in a fair and consistent manner.  The job/promotion/task is given to a preferred person as opposed to the right person. Creativity is not utilised.
